How Solar Power Works

Understanding The Simple Solar Power Process

The Basics

Solar Photovoltaic (PV) electric generation is the formal term for what we all call solar and is a fairly simple process, and not a new one.

Quick fact: The first working solar power system was built in 1954 in Murray Hill, NJ by Bell Labs.

How It Works

Solar cells collect ultraviolet radiation from the sun and generate direct current power. Many cells are strung together to build the solar module, otherwise known as a panel.

Converting Power

The power these panels generate is direct current (DC) power. Since our homes run on alternating current (AC), the DC power needs to be converted using what's known as an inverter.

Two Inverter Types

String inverters: Panels are strung together in circuits and the DC power is sent to one central device for DC/AC conversion.

Microinverters: Each panel has its own inverter, so the DC/AC conversion happens on the roof and then AC power is sent to the house.

Finding Your Best Solution

Both arrangements work great in different situations. Figuring out which arrangement is best for you is part of our job providing you with the best solar solution possible.
